Since creating a family tree three years ago, Sakurai has come to perceive the ancestors in the family portraits as integral parts of their identity. The family tree traces only a small fraction of their ancestry, but countless individuals have connected over thousands and tens of thousands of years to bring Sakurai into existence. While creating, Sakurai reflects on where these ancestors might be now and where humanity is headed.
